That’s it.

All I ever had to ask myself was, what would Giuseppe do?

Suddenly it was clear-as-day. The wall of misfit bricks became like one of those magic-eye posters you used to see at the mall when malls were still a thing. All those seemingly random blocks blurred together – but at either end of the blockade a single brick stood out. And all at once it became clear to me: these two peculiar bricks were cut to precisely the same size and shape, despite being fitted far from one another, amidst all their oddly-shaped cousins.

These two bricks, I reasoned, they’re connected somehow.

They’re entangled.

I touched one of the entangled bricks and it felt loose. I pressed it gently and it slid inward.

“Help me,” I said to my Troll captors, “you see that brick? The one shaped just like this one? Give it a little shove.”

The Troll looked at me with doubt in his eyes but he did as I asked. And when he pressed the corresponding brick it slid inward, too, sinking into the wall. The entire blockade began to grumble and grind. It was a façade – all those misfit bricks were in fact one wide slab of stone, with a relief carved upon its surface to make it appear as though it was many. But truth-be-told, it had always been one . The separate stones had been an illusion. The façade slid back and then to the side, and beyond it a dark passage was revealed.
